Help Using The Carbon Capture Report
The Carbon Capture Report™ offers an incredible range of features and functionality. This help page provides a general overview on how to use some of the key features of the site, as well as addressing frequently asked questions.Daily Reports
You can access any of the Daily Reports by clicking the corresponding link in the navigation bar at the top of the site. This will take you to the "gateway page" for that Daily Report. At the top of the page are quick links to take you directly the the current day's Daily Report (Today's Complete Daily Report) and to the Person and Organization Bibliographical Databases for that Daily Report. Below those links are a series of time series graphs showing how key indicators are currently trending. Finally, at the bottom of the page are links to all of the historical editions of that Daily Report. Click either on the Today's Complete Daily Report link, or one of the historical Daily Report links at the bottom of the page to go to the actual Daily Report for that specific day.Once you have entered the actual Daily Report for a given day, you will see a table of contents at the top of the page, as well as a link to the Mobile-Friendly edition of the Report. If you are accessing The Carbon Capture Report from a mobile phone or low-bandwidth device, you may choose this option to access a text-only summary of just the today's headlines. You can click on any option in the table of contents to jump to that portion in the report.
Mainstream Media
Click on the "Mainstream Media" link to jump to the beginning of the Daily Report, which summaries mainstream news coverage for that day. At the top of this section are a series of statistics and a set of four maps. The top two maps are static GIF images, the one on the left shows the number of articles found in the media of each country (ie, how many articles from China, how many from France, etc), while the map on the right shows how many articles were about each country. The combination of the two maps allows you to see which countries said the most about climate change that day and what countries they were talking about. The bottom two maps offer interactive maps of all articles in either Google Maps or Google Earth. Below the maps are three tables listing the top concepts, people, and organizations from that day's news. Clicking on a Person or Organization entry will take you to their Bibliographical Database entry to see their complete history in that Daily Report.
Headlines
Finally, below this you will find the master Table of Contents for all mainstream media of that day. If a given story appears in multiple outlets (such as a newswire story that was picked up by multiple newspapers), all entries will be clustered together, the first article found that day will be displays, and you will see a link to Show/Hide Additional Articles below the article snippet to access a list of all the other outlets that carried the story. To the right of the snippet is the Categories column that lists all Filter matches for that article. To the right of this is the Reach column which shows how many additional news articles, social bookmarks, and tweets the story has received. If a wire story is picked up by 10 newspapers, is bookmarked on a social bookmarking site once, and is tweeted four times, this column will show "10 Articles / 1 Bookmark / 4 Tweets". Articles are ranked by the combined total of their mainstream and social coverage. Hence, a story that appears only once in the mainstream press, but which goes viral in the social media, will be ranked above an article that only appeared in several small newspapers. This allows you to truly "crowdsource" the key headlines of the day.
Filters
If you have one or more Custom Filters set for this Daily Report, you will see those Filters alongside the built-in filters directly above the headlines list. Clicking the checkbox beside each Filter will filter the headlines table to only display articles matching that filter. If you have multiple filters checked, you will see articles matching any of those categories. This allows you to quickly restrict the displayed results to just those on particular topics. NOTE: Custom Filters will only appear for Daily Reports subsequent to the day you created the Filter.
