Geographic Intelligence

News isn't created or consumed in a spatial vacuum. Location is everywhere: events occur in one location, they may be picked up by the news media in another location, and individuals in yet other locations may comment on them in social media. At each stage there is critical geographic information that helps you understand what's happening where:

Event Location. Our Focus Country map dives into the full text of each article, identifying the most minute geographic references, disambiguating and converting them to precise geographic locations, so you can see at-a-glance where the action is.

Outlet Location. No matter where an event takes place, it may be covered by news outlets anywhere in the world. Which stories resonate with which countries? What are the top stories in Europe today compared with Asia? Building on nearly a decade of research, we build geographic profiles of each and every news outlet we see, and offer interactive Google Maps and Google Earth displays with points on the map for each outlet. For those particularly interested in trends over time, we even offer a Google Earth display that lets you move a timeline slider back-and-forth to see how news coverage has changed over the past 365 days.

Twitterer Location. Nearly 80% of Twitterers discussing climate change include geographic information in their profiles. We use this to help you see what countries in the world are tweeting the most today about the issues that matter to you.

Geographic Intelligence is critical to understanding what's happening around the world. It may be that an event took place in China, with European news media picking up on it, but perhaps it is people in Russia that are responding the most to it on Twitter. Such geographic insights, available exclusively from the Carbon Capture Report, put you at the forefront of understanding each day.
